The first time an iron frame was used was in France, in the year 1826. Along with the Gladstone bag and Rosebery, these became the predecessors of the modern briefcase. What is now the modern briefcase was invented somewhere in the late 1850s and by the 1980s it had become a staple of white-collar workers and business people.
